Abide Family Center is located in Jinja, Uganda. This location was chosen because the Ugandan government recently estimated there are over 40,000 children living in institutional care in this East African country.
Four out of five children in Ugandan orphanages have living family members. They are not really ‘orphans’ at all. We have found children are growing up in institutions because their families are unable to financially provide for them. Without a strong safety net, desperate caregivers are left with few options and are forced to place their children in a local orphanage.
We work with local government officials, orphanages and NGOs to identify at-risk caregivers who are in need of an alternative solution. Through supporting and strengthening families in the southeastern region of Uganda and by providing caregivers the tools necessary to move toward independence we believe the number of children living in institutional care will decrease dramatically.
